FILM AND TELEVISION

The LSA Film & TV curriculum provides students with a broad knowledge of the many skills and disciplines within the screen and creative industries. Our unique FTV curriculum has been developed with leading industry experts so that we can deliver a real-world relevant education that prepares student for higher education and working in the modern world. Our programme is project based and students spend two years exploring and developing in their chosen pathway, based on their interests and talents.

LSA students study the UAL Level 3 Diploma/ Extended Diploma in Creative Practice; this qualification is equivalent to three A-Levels and requires students to spend 15 hours per week learning about Film + TV. Alongside pathway classes, students also take part in weekly Masterclasses and screenings.

Students will explore the cultural and historical significance of film and television, learn to improve their communication skills, work constructively within a team, gain screen business knowledge and develop self-management skills. Throughout their time at LSA, all students are taught storytelling as an integral part of the creative process.

MATHS, EPQ and ENGLISH (Additional Qualification)

In addition to the Extended Diploma, all students take on one Additional Qualification (AdQual) which develops their critical, reflective, problem solving and independent learning skills. These qualifications ensure students are given the chance to develop their learning in an area they are interested in or within the core aspects of Maths & English.

The additional qualification studied is dependent on each individual student. You will do one of the following - Maths or English GCSE (Take Two), English Literature & Language A Level, Maths A Level or an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). The subject teaching time varies from 2 - 5 hrs depending on the qualification.

Careers Development

LSA is unique and exciting; we are redefining what creative education means through a collaborative partnership between our teachers and global professionals working within the creative industries.

As a vocational sixth form academy for the creative industries, Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) is at the heart of LSA’s offer. The LSA Careers Plan is integrated into every aspect of the curriculum, from student project ideation & development, through weekly masterclasses, mentoring programmes and bespoke training events.

The LSA Careers & Progression offer is designed to maximise the opportunities for students to engage with industry practitioners, to develop students’ knowledge, professionalism and confidence and helps break down perceived barriers to entry. Establishing strong relationships with industry partners educates the students about available roles and provides potential employers with a source of skilled new talent, which is vital in a growing industry currently experiencing skills shortages.

Personal Development

There is a varied personal development programme at LSA which is delivered through a weekly PSHE programme that covers health, relationships, well being, independent living and future goals. Students also participate in a variety of activities depending on individual need, interest and ambitions. These activities range from careers guidance, SEND support, personal mentoring & group mentoring, therapeutic art sessions and talking therapies.

The personal development curriculum is overseen by the Director for Inclusion and the wider team of specialists including Pastoral & SENCO leads, Learning Support Assistants, therapeutic staff and careers specialists.

Each student is encouraged to consider their ambitions, personal goals and then to think about how they might meet them. Students can access a number of therapies and support programmes depending on need and context, ensuring all students have the tools to access opportunities and engage with all that LSA has to offer.

Enrichment programme

LSAx is all about ideas, culture and inspiration and the X stands for: experience, exchange of ideas and extra-curricular. The intention of the LSAx Programme is to offer opportunities for enrichment beyond the main LSA programmes. These opportunities are mostly focused around developing cultural capital, broadening life experiences and rounding out the employability skills and professional behaviours that would make someone more likely to succeed in the creative industries.

The programme comprises (but is not be limited to) the following components:

Course-related visits: Throughout the year, particularly in the early stage of projects, there may be trips to museums, galleries, cinemas, theatres, film-sets, studios etc which will allow students to develop their research ideas, inspire their own productions and visit new places.

Regular enrichment sessions (designed in collaboration with LSA students) are embedded into the LSA day. These are designed to be enriching for young creatives and include activities such as dance, drama, sports, art, creative writing, charity, book club and podcasting and zine making.
