David Heyman x Speakers for Schools

Every year, students in secondary schools make decisions that shape their future - decisions including which subjects they’ll take on as GCSEs, whether they will go to a sixth form or college or take up an Apprenticeship and, ultimately, what they might like to pursue as a career.

Information about careers in the creative industries - in Film + TV production in particular - exists, however, schools often struggle in making this information accessible to their students. It’s imperative that young people know what opportunities exist for them after school, and this information must be as inclusive of all industries as possible.

We work closely with schools and organisations to demystify Film + TV production for young people; this includes talking about the wide range of job roles and progression routes, highlighting the career journeys of professionals from different backgrounds, showcasing opportunities for young people and more.

On Tuesday 18 May 2021 we partnered up with Speakers For Schools to deliver a live broadcast to young people in schools across London about the film industry with one of our Founders, film producer David Heyman of Heyday Films.

A total of 508 students from 30 schools tuned in to hear about how David began his career, to learn about the productions that he has worked on from his perspective as a filmmaker and, crucially, to ask why LSA is so important to him on both a professional and personal level.

Here’s a look at some of the feedback we got after the Q+A:

“Excellent insight into the industry and good professional experience.”

“The students loved the fact that David produced Harry Potter! The students were in Year 7 and they were engaged and liked the talk about his life. It is good to put other careers ideas in front of our students so they know what other opportunities are available to them. They were also amazed they could attend the college for free!”

“The students gained a broader understanding of the filmmaking process from writing to post-production and the transferable skills involved. Also thank you for also taking my class's question re: improvements to past films. The girls really appreciated it!”

If you would like LSA to deliver a talk to your school or community youth organisation, please email Rochelle Laurencin, our Community Partnerships Manager at Rochelle.Laurencin@LSA.ac.uk.

There are many communities that have traditionally been under-represented in the screen industries and we especially welcome students currently receiving Free School Meals, to help address this imbalance.
